Belgium takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union

Did you know that every six months, a different EU country holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union? From the start of January until June 2024, it is Belgium’s turn to take this important responsibility.

Essentially, this means Belgium will organise the meetings of the countries’ leaders and suggest the topics on which they would like the EU to make progress.  

Belgium has set six priority areas under the motto "Protect, Strengthen, Prepare": 

  • Defending rule of law, democracy, and unity 

  • Strengthening our competitiveness 

  • Pursuing a green and just transition 

  • Reinforcing our social and health agenda 

  • Protecting people and borders 

  • Promoting a global Europe
