Children’s views on how to prevent cyberbullying

Last September, the European Commission called children and teens to fill in an online survey on cyberbullying. Over 6,300 children aged 12-17 from across the EU shared their views.

  • 29% reported having experienced cyberbullying themselves and 39% having seen it happen to others.
  • 62% would turn to a parent or carer for help and support, 41% to a friend and 25% to a teacher or school staff.
  • 56% of children want schools to enforce clear rules and consequences for cyberbullying, while 54% believe cyberbullying should be taught in class. 49% want support, including psychological, for those who have been bullied

Participants shared their ideas on what could be done to help prevent cyberbullying, and how to support children and teens affected by it.

What is the situation like in your school or class? What can pupils, educators and schools do to prevent or help victims?
