Every six months, a different EU Member State takes on the EU presidency. This means that it heads the Council of the European Union, organises the meetings of the leaders of the Member States, and indicates the areas in which it would like the EU to progress. France’s turn started on 1 January.
Under the motto ‘Recovery, Strength and a Sense of Belonging’, France aims to promote:
- economic recovery and strengthening to enable Europe to succeed in the green and digital transitions;
- the strength to defend and promote our values and interests;
- a sense of belonging in order to build and develop a common European way of thinking: through culture, our shared values, our common history.

In cooperation with the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission, France will also have a unique opportunity to conclude the Conference on the Future of Europe and launch the European Year of Youth.
