International Day of Education 2024

European Union, 2023 Scopes : Partial reuse prohibited, Information and education only, Non-commercial use, Special conditions to be respected

24 January is International Day of Education around the world.

Adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2018, this day highlights the role education has towards peace and development.

According to the UN, 244 million children and youth are out of school, and 771 million adults are illiterate. Their right to education is being violated and it is unacceptable.

Education is the most powerful tool to break the cycle of poverty, erase gender inequalities and stimulate economic growth.

This sixth International Day of Education will focus on "learning for lasting peace" during a global surge in violence, discrimination, racism, and hate speech, emphasising the crucial need for a commitment to peace.

The EU institutions and Member States together contribute more than half of all global aid to education, supporting the education sector in more than 100 countries all around the world.
