24 January is International Day of Education around the world.
Adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2018, this day highlights the role education has towards peace and development.
According to the UN, 244 million children and youth are out of school, and 771 million adults are illiterate. Their right to education is being violated and it is unacceptable.
Education is the most powerful tool to break the cycle of poverty, erase gender inequalities and stimulate economic growth.
This year's Day’s theme is “to invest in people, prioritize education”. It calls for maintaining strong political mobilisation around education and chart the way to translate commitments and global initiatives into action.
The EU institutions and Member States together contribute more than half of all global aid to education, supporting the education sector in more than 100 countries all around the world.
